LONE FALLOW PRICKET
It’s one of those perfect late-summer evenings. A gentle warmth in the air. The smell of harvest clinging to the stubble. Hedges bending under the weight of berries. Leaves just starting to turn.
We park up, check the wind and choose our path. The sun is dropping behind us as we edge along a field margin. There are deer here. It feels like one of those evenings, and the route is littered with fresh droppings.
A pair of muntjac mooch in the cover crop to our right. They’re safe. Today we’re after fallow.
We stop beneath an oak and watch the woodland below. We don’t have to wait long. A lone pricket hops the ditch and steps into the open. He has no idea we’re there. Broadside at 180 metres. A few seconds on the sticks and a clean shot.
It doesn’t often go like this. Some outings make you work for it. Others just fall into place.
